Restoration of 5000 Now Complete!

Restoration work on 5000, which was started in March of 2004, was completed this week by Society members.

Approximately 2000 volunteer man-hours were required to bring the engine back to it's original beauty. The Society has many people and businesses to thank for their support. Without them, the Society would not have been able to restore 5000.

Here are a few facts about the restoration:

The City of Amarillo Parks and Recreation Department owns the locomotive and the ground it is displayed on. The City Parks Department provided the funds needed to purchase materials and other items that were not donated.
The Society wishes to thanks Larry Offerdahl and Clint Stoddard of the Parks Department for their support of the project.

40 gallons of paint were used to re-paint the locomotive and tender. Special thanks goes to Kevin Hamby, Manager of the I-40 Sherwin-Williams Paint Store in Amarillo for your generous donation and technical guidance.

Teague Construction Inc. provided the necessary tools and equipment used in the restoration since 2004. Individual workers provided their own hand tools such as paint brushes, grinders, and other small hand and electric tools.

Amarillo Bolt Company donated most of the bolts, screws, washers etc. needed for the restoration.

Royal Glass of Amarillo donated most of the glass replaced.

Larry Bryant and family of Amarillo donated and installed the canvas side curtains, backdrop, window awnings, and locomotive flags.

There were many others to thanks but not enough space here.
For a complete list of sponsors see our "Contributors" Page on our website.

Everyone is invited to come to Amarillo and Celebrate the Restoration on August 23, 2008. Check out our website for more details about the celebration!
